Era il 1984-1985 e da un'idea di Bob Geldof e Midge Ure, insieme a grandi star della musica britannica, si riunirono tutti, per scrivere un nuovo singolo per raccogliere fondi per aiutare il continente africano contro la fame. Il singolo venne prodotto da Midge Ure e scritto insieme a Bob Geldof verso la fine del 1984; proprio in quel periodo un servizio della BBC fece conoscere al mondo la reale e difficile situazione dell'Etiopia. Bob Geldof decise cosi' di produrre un singolo per ottenere fondi per aiutare l'Africa. Cosi' nacque il singolo "Do They Know It's Christmas?" e successivamente il gruppo di artisti sotto il noto nome di "Band Aid". In America poco piu' tardi venne pubblicato il singolo "We Are The World" scritto da Michael Jackson e Lionel Richie per lo stesso scopo benefico!
